Via dell’Arringo is the clearest result of a huge, late-Medieval renovation of the Roman and Early-Medieval urban fabric. The street is closed by actual symbols of power on its short sides, the Town Hall and the Cathedral.
The reasons that led to its creation can be sought in the works that determined the construction of the new cathedral, the transformation of surrounding buildings and the transfer of the Bishop’s Palace to St. Euphemia at the end of the 12th century. The street is thus named as it led to the “Arringo” (or “Arenga”), i.e. the place for people assemblies that used to be held in piazza del Duomo since ancient times.
