Via Palazzo dei Duchi

Left of the fountain in piazza del Mercato, on the way toward the Cathedral, you walk on “via del Palazzo dei Duchi”, named after the erroneous conviction that the remains found under the street level were part of a Roman building, used as seat of power by the Longobard dukes. Here the old church of San Donato used to stand, of which some remains are still visible, but following gross neglect, in the 16th century some workshops were opened there.
Mostly goldsmiths, silversmiths and jeweleries, the shops were created using stones from a 1573 excavation. In the street it is possible to see 14th-century decorations on Casa Spiga and Casa Conca’s flyover.
